Blog URL change
Hey guys
From now on, this blog will not be hmcomputing.wordpress.com. It has been officially changed to www.hmcomputing.com!
Anyone with RSS feed subscriptions may have to redirect their feed to feed://hmcomputing.com/feed/ .
This change was put into effect so that an app for the blog could be developed.
I’ll notify you when the app is released.
From Harry.
PizzaBot + hmcomputing app might be coming soon!
Hey guys, it’s me again.
Just posting to inform you about our two biggest events yet: PizzaBot: Galactic and a hmcomputing iPhone and Android app!
PizzaBot for Mac is going to be my first ever game, and might be released on a Mac near you pretty soon. In it’s story, you play on a cyborg slice of pineapple and pepperoni pizza who has just escaped from an oven, to find himself in a kitchen totally invaded by salami! You play on the pizza as you try to liberate the kitchen from these horrible invaders. His cybernetic implants enable him to fly and shoot. The style of the game is like Space Invaders, as the salami is coming in waves, and you blast the waves away. The salami can also shoot chips of broken-off salami back at you.
hmcomputing for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is going to be an iOS-native app for the blog. It sends you notificatios if there is a new post, and might even allow you to save posts for viewing offline. This app could also have a forum of questions on technology as well. It should be realeased either very soon, or not at all.
So that could be two apps coming soon, so I think this blog has a pretty bright future ahead. Check below for a picture of the PizzaBot.

iPhone 4S Released!
The news of the press release of the new iPhone 4S’ press release has been somewhat dwarfed by the shock of Steve Jobs’ death, and not many people have even heard of the upgrade. I was slightly disappointed at first sight of the new iPhone, as it retains the case of its predecessor, the iPhone 4. But the insides of the new phone is a lot more impressive than the skin.
It has a Dual Core A5 processor, which gives it 7 times the Graphics Speed and up to 2 times the Performance Speed of the 4, which puts it into competition with phones like HTC’s Sensation and Samsung’s Galaxy S II. According to Engadget, it’s a lot zippier than the previous generation.
The camera has also been bumped up to 8 Megapixel, which Apple claims to be “The best camera ever on a phone”. And it certainly looks it, with the stills and video being absolutely amazing. Apple demonstrates the camera with the usual stills of colorful, crashing balloons and a new video frame of a man jumping off a wooden pier.
The 4S also comes preloaded with Apple’s new iOS 5 Mobile Operating System, available for download for 3 and 4 G iPod Touches, both iPad models, and iPhone 3GS and 4, on the 12th of October 2011. (My iPod’s too old to get iOS 5. Aaah!) This includes over 200 new features, including NewsStand, iMessage, Notification Centre, Reminders, PC Free and iCloud (More info available at http://www.apple.com/ie/ios/features.html ) The 4S also has a new feature exclusive to itself; Siri. Codenamed Assistant, this feature allows a new Voice Control feature where you ask the phone the history of Cork City, or the weather in London, or the latest Rugby World Cup scores (Ireland just lost against Wales! Stupid!) and Siri will answer them all. It also allows you to send texts just by talking, as Apple showed a guy jogging along a road, while speaking to his colleagues at a business conference through a bluetooth headset connected to his trusty old iPhone. So you can work… While working out! Testers who have used Siri say this could revolutionize the world just like the mouse did, and I wouldn’t be surprised about that. After all, Apple have revolutionized the world 3 times already. ( iPod, iPhone, and iPad.)
So no full-on reviews yet, guys. I haven’t got my hands on one of these yet. The US, Australian, Canadian and a few other country releases are on the 12th of October, while guys in countries such as Ireland and the UK don’t get it ’till the 28th.
So I don’t have one…
Yet.
Steve Jobs… In Memorial
Steve Jobs, one of the world’s most creative and innovative geniuses… Died last night. The head of Apple had been there from the company’s very start, the real driving force behind the business, but the news of his death dwarfs even the launch of the iPhone 4S 2 days ago. Steve Jobs should be remembered in history, as the co-creator of one of the most Innovative companies of all time… Apple.
As a result of all his work towards the company we have today, he was sadly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004 and, last night, lost his final battle against the illness.
My National Novel Writing Month 50,000 word long novel, is now going to be named The Biggest Bytes of Apple, and will be dedicated to Steve Jobs.
I’m changing the website layout to a Retro Mac image for a week in memorial of Steve.

Lion vs Snow Leopard: Is the new Mac OS really worth it?
I know, Apple have been making a pretty big deal of the new Mac OS X Lion, but is it really worth the switch? You can find out now, in this full-on Lion vs. Leopard review, which shows the Pros and Cons of each software version, plus a review at the end to see if Lion really is worth the €25 necessary for an upgrade. Also, see our previous post for a poll on which computer OS is the best, Windows, Mac or Linux.
Web Development: OS X Lion does have some new features in the development category, but is it any better than Snow Leopard at it? One thing Lion can’t match is the easy, efficient website development skills of Snow Leopard, which are put together in one application; iWeb
It might come as a shock to most people (including myself) that Apple decided to delete this tool in their upgrade to Lion, and I can’t see any reason why they should have. iWeb was one of the easiest website development tools available, and it allowed even minor companies and schools to have first-class websites. Lion, on the other hand, does not have any default website development tools, and even though the Xcode suite has a set of new features, the application creating software has lost a bit of the simplicity it used to have, and most tutorial books on developing iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac apps correspond with the old Xcode software, which I find very frustrating as I am trying to work on building an iPhone game (I’ll post the name and profile of it once it is built.) For the moment, I think OS X Lion development isn’t really there yet.
Winner; OS X Snow Leopard.
Multitasking; This is one of the areas where Lion really stands out. The new multitasking feature, Mission Control, sets it well ahead of the competition, as pressing the F3 key, or swiping up with 3 fingers on the trackpad, will show every window open at that time, and allow you to create new ones. You can also switch between them by swiping sideways with 3 fingers. This is my favorite multitasking feature of any Operating system. Also, a new feature named Launchpad allows you to view every one of your apps, iPad-style, across a few screens. You can also use Launchpad to view the progress of your downloads. Lion still has the much loved bottom-bar multitasking used in Snow Leopard, but launchpad and mission control certainly give it the edge here.
Winner; OS X Lion.
Presentation; Lion has one new feature when it comes to this, and it’s called Full-Screen apps. Now, apps like Pages can get an entirely new look, and it also makes some apps a lot more readable. No contest here.
Winner; OS X Lion.
The Verdict; Lion is worth €25 if you’re willing to cough it up, but not by too much. If you’re a developer, or hope to be one, it’s different. You might not want to upgrade until you’re absoloutely sure.
